Oh wow… sometimes I forget not everybody understands programming languages, I guess I’ll have to switch back to English.
My name is Ehiem Chioma, I’m 16 years old and I am a programmer…an amateur anyways but I’m sure it still counts
I understand the C programming language to a very far extent, I probably can’t say I know all there is to know about it. But the basic fact remains that I can code, even if its just one language for now its still quite a lot considering the fact that I am a “girl”.
My Journey to Code Land
I started learning C programming in October 2021 at Kiddies Droid CS hub, and I can say that I got a pretty wide knowledge on the language at the ending of November 2021. So, what exactly am I trying to say? I’m saying that if I was able to acquire such vast knowledge on one of the Worlds oldest and most popular programming language within a months’ time as a “girl” it basically busts all the myths on why and how “Girls cant code” or “Coding is a boys thing” and so many more that I probably don’t want to think of right now.
Initially, when I had just started learning it, I started with the theory aspect of it and then it looked quite easy and simple to understand, some things were confusing though but I assumed they would all clear out when I got to the practical aspect.
Lo and behold, I got to the practical aspect, where I would actually get to write some codes and at first the confusing things I thought would clear out did not clear out initially. But not to worry its more or less like trying to learn a new difficult topic in school, it requires dedication and practice to understand it fully. So that’s what I did, I put in more practice personally and with time I was able to get the hang of it much to the surprise of my teacher too.
It became something I was always looking forward to in each class no matter how tired or stressed I might have been and before you know it I was being referred to as Coding Brunette after the famous Coding Blonde. From then on, I realized that I actually wanted to learn more than just the c programming I wanted to expand my knowledge base and become a big personality in the tech many years to come.
I’ve now stated venturing into other aspects like web design/development, UI-UX, HTML, CSS and JavaScript too. I plan on learning so many other things too and the amazing thing about it is that I am surrounded with people who will guide, support and encourage me along the way.
That is also an advantage of being a female in the tech world because you would have people who would be so interested in what you do and would want to help you grow. Sure, they might be some people that would try and discourage you but don’t let it get you down. There is so much you can do when you put your mind to it
This write-Up could mean different things to different people. Some may see it as me trying to show guys how much girls can code, some may see it in another way. But truth be told what I really want this to do is just to encourage young girls like me not to turn their backs on coding or “tech stuff”. We really need more girls in the world of ICT. Females who would stand out in the so-called Male-Dominated workspace. The fact that I was the only female student in a class of 10 shows how much we need females to come on-board this movement.
So, I hope this Write-up has been able to do justice to that and has been able to convince young girls to go into the tech-world. It’s been nice writing this, hopefully you enjoyed reading it too.
Till we meet again
CodingBrunette is out.
